Thanks for posting that link!
oh hannah-this is a great post. i have been thinking on these things lately...i have a daughter, who is 5, and she has been asked several times if we highlight her hair "because it's just so beautiful and streaky". A FIVE YEAR OLD!?! no, no , no- of course we don't. i just can't say enough how much this post resonates with me. i see my friends feeling helpless in this sea of materialism, sexuality, 'diva' syndrome, yet they are the ones buying their girls the latest barbie or disney princess movie. i see mothers hating the outcome, but perpetuating it through the clothes they buy, the toys the allow in, the music they think it is 'so cute' that their 3 year old likes. it breaks my heart. God is revealing to me that i have not spent enough time in prayer over this...better get to that!
I wanted to comment on this subject as my daughter is 13 and this is a hard time for her. We just got finished reading quite a few post about this subject. I am glad to see other mothers are doing the same. Investing time in our childrens lives is very important. Whether they are 5 or 20 you need to still spend time with them.
Thanks for this post... As a mom of 2 girls..(6 and 3) I am so worried about this... I know how easy it is to fall into the pretty, glittery things. My girls like to play dress up..( and I am fine with this) but I am asked why their ears are not pierced and why they are not allowed to wear nail polish. We live in a town that I grew up in, but has changed over the years to be a bit, materialistic... and I am trying to smooth that down a bit. Hopefully I will prevail. Sue in South Jersey
I miss your posts. They always seem to give me a sense of calm and something to think about.Just thought I'd tell you.
